Nearly four in 10 madrasas listed under Uttarakhand’s previous regulatory framework have shut down, according to official data, as the state overhauls its system for recognising minority educational institutions. Of 452 previously registered madrasas, 179 are no longer operating, while 19 have been sealed for alleged rule violations. Only 30 have secured recognition from the Education Department, with 134 applications pending and 54 institutions yet to apply. Meanwhile, the newly established Uttarakhand State Minority Education Authority has recognised 35 minority institutions, including 33 madrasas. The figures come amid a regulatory transition following the replacement of the Uttarakhand Madrasa Board.
