Silchar: BJP opened its account in the maiden Silchar Municipal Corporation election, with two candidates elected unopposed on Thursday, the last day for withdrawing nominations.Bijendra Prasad Singh won Ward 9 after Congress candidate Amalendu Dey and SUCI nominee Apanlal Das withdrew. Bhakti Sen Talukdar was elected unopposed from Ward 20 after Independent candidate Rupali Das withdrew her nomination.Polling will now be held in 40 of the corporation’s 42 wards.BJP has fielded candidates in 38 wards, while its ally AGP has nominated candidates in four, covering all 42 wards.Polling is scheduled for Oct 3 from 7.30 am to 4 pm. Counting will begin at 8 am on Oct 6.The election is Silchar’s first under the municipal corporation structure. The erstwhile municipal board was upgraded to a corporation, expanding the civic body to 42 wards.
