CHENNAI: Tambaram corporation commissioner S Balachander, IAS, has been relieved of his duties and placed on compulsory wait following allegations of tender irregularities in two civic works worth Rs 45.9 lakh.This is the first instance of an IAS officer being placed on compulsory wait following a report by anti-corruption organisation Arappor Iyakkam.A govt order issued by chief secretary M Sai Kumar on Tuesday said Balachander was relieved as commissioner with immediate effect.Avadi corporation commissioner R Saranya, IAS, has been given full additional charge as Tambaram commissioner until further orders.The action comes after Arappor alleged that the two works had been completed and inaugurated before tenders were opened for bidding. The works involved an Ashoka Pillar statue at Perungalathur Bridge Roundana and a Save Water Concept statue at Chitlapakkam Roundana. Both tenders were published on Aug 6, while the works were inaugurated on July 29.
