Mohali: A Sector 86 resident was allegedly defrauded of ₹97,995 after his mobile phone was compromised, leading to six unauthorised UPI transactions from his bank account within 30 minutes on Thursday evening.The victim, Sajjan Singh, detected the cyber fraud after receiving SMS alerts on his phone. The unauthorised debits comprised one initial transfer of ₹48,000 followed by five consecutive debits of ₹9,999 each, all routed to an account labelled Nandakis.Singh immediately alerted his bank and had the account blocked, successfully safeguarding his remaining account balance.Following the incident, Singh submitted a written complaint to the cyber crime branch, seeking a technical probe to identify how the perpetrators breached his device or UPI access, trace the account holders, and recover the stolen money. Police are examining whether the phone was hacked or compromised via remote malware.Cyber fraud incidents continue to surge across Mohali and Punjab through digital arrests and phishing traps. To counter the threat, the Punjab Police state cyber crime wing arrested multiple account-mule providers in Mohali between March and June 2026. Official data up to June 2026 shows that 63,749 fraud-linked bank accounts were frozen state-wide over a one-year period, with approximately ₹64 crore refunded to victims.
