Chennai: Motorists unsure about pending traffic e-challans can approach 15 special centres operated by Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) from Sept 21 to 30. Officials will also contact vehicle owners to alert them about unpaid fines. The centres will function daily from 9am to 7pm.Police said this has been launched because many motorists are unaware of e-challans generated for violations detected through automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, traffic regulation observation zones (TROZ) and other enforcement systems. Some motorists also avoid opening links sent by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), suspecting them to be fraudulent.At the centres, personnel will inform motorists about pending challans and fine amounts and assist those making inquiries over phone or in person. Bulk SMS alerts will also be sent to motorists with unpaid challans.The centres will function at ICF annexure police booth in Ayanavaram, Music Academy police booth in Royapettah, Greenways junction police booth in Abiramapuram, Tower Clock junction police booth on Anna Salai, Anna Nagar Roundana, Anna Arch traffic police booth, Maduravoyal traffic police station, Madhavaram Roundana, Elephant Gate police station, New Washermenpet police station, Sembium police station, Mambalam police station, Adyar police station, Traffic Mount subdivision campus beneath Kathipara flyover and the ITMS headquarters at the police commissioner’s office in Vepery.Motorists can also verify pending challans through the official Parivahan e-Challan portal or NextGen e-Challan. Fines can be paid online through NextGen e-Challan, Paytm, post offices or Tamil Nadu e-Sevai centres. Drunk-driving fines can be paid through courts.Police have given motorists a week to check and clear pending fines. Repeat offenders booked multiple times for the same violation could face enhanced fines and further action, including suspension or cancellation of their driving licence, an official release said.
