Tripura woman gets 3-yr RI in NDPS case

Agartala: A special NDPS court in Belonia has sentenced a woman to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined her ₹25,000 for possessing prohibited cough syrup.The court convicted Chandi Mala Tripura under Section 21(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, in a case registered after South Tripura district police recovered 75 bottles of restricted cough syrup from her residence in Nipendra Nagar village.Acting on specific information, police conducted a search at the house and registered a case under sections 21(C), 25, 27-A and 29 of the NDPS Act. Police said the investigation followed due legal procedures and the charge sheet was filed within 87 days.The conviction comes as part of enforcement efforts under the state’s “Nasha Mukt Tripura Abhiyan” to curb the illegal trade and distribution of narcotic substances.
