Police file 102 FIRs over display of weapons on social media; 130 held

Patna: Under a special drive against the growing trend of displaying weapons on social media, Bihar Police registered 102 FIRs and arrested 130 accused between May 1 and July 14 across the state. As many as 40 weapons were also seized during the drive.Patna district registered the highest number of cases, 17, with 29 arrests and the seizure of nine illegal weapons during the period.Meanwhile, under the statewide campaign ‘Naya Savera 3.0’, conducted from July 1 to 14 to combat human trafficking, 157 people were rescued, including 82 women and 75 men.Police registered 52 FIRs and arrested 109 alleged human traffickers. The top three districts in terms of arrests were Patna (40), Saharsa (13) and Kishanganj (9). For victims’ rescue, the top three districts were Kishanganj (23), Sitamarhi (17), and Patna, Arwal and Muzaffarpur Rail (14 combined).Sharing the details at a news conference held here on Friday, ADG (law & order and weaker sections) K Suhita Anupam said strict action is being taken against those evading arrest and those misusing social media platforms.“As part of the drive against fugitives, police conducted a special attachment campaign from July 11 to 20. During this period, 2,125 attachment proceedings were executed across the state. In addition to attachment proceedings, legal action is being expedited against criminals who out of police net,” she said.The ADG added that action is also being taken against those posting religious or caste-based content to disturb social harmony, as well as those making obscene remarks against individuals. A total of 514 objectionable posts and viral videos were identified and sent for action. Of these, action has already been taken in 243 cases, while the remaining are under process.She also announced that character verification certificates for youth have now been made available online. The system has been integrated with police stations through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and the relevant portal to make the process faster and more transparent.“In May and June this year, police took action in cases affecting law and order. A total of 533 accused were arrested, including 63 in communal violence cases, 462 for attacks on police personnel, two for mob violence and six for celebratory firing. To ensure speedy disposal of cases, 51,189 witnesses were summoned, of whom 49,191 deposed before the courts,” the ADG said.Anupam said in May and June this year, large-scale action was also taken along the India-Nepal border following intelligence inputs regarding terrorist activities. An alert has been issued along the border, and the situation is being monitored directly by the Union home ministry.In line with the Centre’s goal of a drug-free India by 2027, continuous action is being taken against narcotics. From May-June this year, police seized 17.883kg of heroin and 26,135kg of ganja, besides other narcotic substances. Supply chains, including medical stores, are also under investigation.To educate youth about laws, ‘Operation Vidhi Palak Yuvak’ will be conducted from July 21 to Aug 10. Under the campaign, awareness will be created about laws relating to human trafficking, dowry harassment, Pocso Act, crimes against women and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1986.For women’s safety, ‘Police Didi Teams’, also known as the ‘Abhaya Brigade’, have been formed at educational institutions and other key public places.
