Madikeri Dasara to be celebrated on Oct 21 after date row is resolved

Madikeri: Madikeri Dasara will be celebrated on Vijayadashami, Oct 21, ending confusion over the date of this year’s festival.A few days ago, four Karaga committees had decided to celebrate Vijayadashami on Oct 20 based on astrological calculations. Following objections from several quarters, a meeting was held on Wednesday at the Kanchi Kamakshi Karaga Temple.During the meeting, participants agreed that Madikeri Dasara should follow tradition and align with Dasara celebrations in Mysuru and Mangaluru, both of which will observe Vijayadashami on Oct 21. The committees also felt that concluding the festival before Mysuru’s famed Dasara procession would be inappropriate. The festival’s highlight, the Dasha Mantapa, a 10-tableau procession, will be taken out on the night of Oct 21. The festival will conclude on the morning of Oct 22 with the traditional Banni tree ritual.Kanchi Kamakshi Temple representative Ravikumar on Thursday said that ‘Shobha Yatre’ to mark Vijayadashami will be held on Oct 21.According to Ravikumar, this year’s Madikeri Dasara will be celebrated for 11 days, from Oct 11, instead of the customary 10 days.
