Dharwad: Legislative council member FH Jakkappanavar on Tuesday stressed the need to deepen awareness of democracy so that every citizen understands its values, principles and constitutional foundations.Inaugurating the International Day of Democracy-2026 and Youth Parliament programme at Aluru Venkata Rao Hall, Jakkappanavar said Karnataka had set an example by organising a massive human chain stretching from Basavanna’s Anubhava Mantapa to Chamarajanagar across all 31 districts, reaffirming its commitment to the Constitution.He said young people must be educated about the nation’s history and democratic traditions. Youth Parliament programmes are being organised at district and taluk levels to familiarise students with democratic institutions and ideals.Deputy commissioner Snehal R said democracy guarantees freedom of speech, movement and voting rights. Every citizen should understand the rights enshrined in the Constitution and the essence of democratic governance, she said.ZP CEO Bhuvanesh Patil said democracy means a government “of the people, by the people and for the people”. Referring to the Constitution’s opening words, “We, the People of India,” he said the nation is built by its citizens.Additional deputy commissioner Geetha CD administered the Preamble reading, while Karnataka University professor Sadanand Sugandhi delivered a special lecture. Police superintendent Gunjan Arya and other officials were present.
