Kim’s ‘Ghost Sub’ Returns? North Korea Revives First Ballistic-missile Submarine

Satellite imagery has shown North Korea’s 8.24 Yongung ballistic missile submarine inside drydock at the Sinpho South Shipyard, raising speculation that Pyongyang may be refurbishing or upgrading the vessel. The submarine, part of the Sinpo or Gorae class, has been used to test North Korea’s submarine-launched missiles and helped lay the groundwork for its expanding undersea nuclear programme. The activity comes as Pyongyang continues developing a much larger nuclear-powered submarine and a more survivable sea-based deterrent.
