Joe diGenova, the Trump-aligned former federal prosecutor selected to lead a sweeping investigation into officials who previously investigated Donald Trump, has abruptly resigned. His departure reportedly followed disagreements with Justice Department leadership over staffing, resources and a request to construct a secure facility for examining classified material. DiGenova left while investigators were presenting a witness to a grand jury. The inquiry initially focused on former CIA director John Brennan before expanding to examine an alleged conspiracy involving officials connected to the FBI’s Russia investigation, the January 6 prosecution and the Mar-a-Lago documents case. Former FBI director James Comey also reportedly emerged as a potential target. Previous investigations identified failures and misconduct but did not establish the sweeping criminal conspiracy alleged by Trump and his allies. The Justice Department says it remains confident in the investigation despite diGenova’s departure.
