Ghaziabad: As many as 87 people died, and 92 were injured in 171 road accidents on NH-9 in the city between 2023 and 2025, with driver negligence, drunk driving, wrong-side driving and speeding accounting for a majority of the crashes, data shared by the traffic police showed.In 2023, the highway recorded 57 accidents, in which 31 people were killed and 31 injured. The number of accidents fell marginally to 55 in 2024, but 29 people were killed and 27 injured that year.In 2025, NH-9 recorded its highest accident count at 59, in which 27 people died and 34 were injured, even as the annual death toll continued its downward trend from 2023.Traffic police have identified 13 blackspots along NH-9, which runs from UP Gate on the Delhi-Ghaziabad border to Dasna in the city. Of these, three are in Wave City police station area near Sunderdeep college, Sadbhavna cut and Welcome Gate near Aditya World City, and four are in Masuri area at Dasna flyover, Masuri flyover, Dasna Jail cut and Masuri underpass.Two more are in Vijay Nagar police station area — at ABES Cut and Vijay Nagar T-point. One each is in Indirapuram at Gaurav Green Chowraha, Kaushambi at UP Gate, Kavi Nagar in front of Manipal Hospital, and Crossings Republik at ABES Cut. Police said they were coordinating with the district administration and other departments to eliminate these blackspots.A senior police officer told TOI that trucks and motorcycles were involved in most accidents reported on NH-9. In the latest crash on Aug 30, a couple died after a truck rammed their motorcycle from behind near Chhijarsi Cut. Earlier, on Aug 3, a 20-year-old man heading to Haridwar for a Kanwar pilgrimage died after being run over by a truck at the same spot. Police said the victim fell from his bike after a roadways bus brushed against it while he was turning onto the highway. His pillion rider suffered minor injuries. On Aug 5, a 30-year-old man was killed and seven passengers injured when a roadways bus hit a tractor-trolley carrying iron rods near Crossings Republik.Cops have also flagged drunk driving on NH-9. In a crackdown over the past 15 days, police caught more than 200 offenders and released them after warnings.“Between Jan 1 and Aug 31 this year, we have issued 1,187,635 challans to motorists for various traffic violations, including riding without helmets, wrong-side driving, rash driving and drunk driving, across the city. More than 40% of the challans were issued on NH-9 itself. Maximum challans were issued in Aug (1,26,105), followed by July (1,25,104), June (1,14,348),” additional DCP (traffic) Varun Kumar Singh said.According to the data, 5,33,988 challans were issued to bikers caught riding without helmets.“NH-9 is adjacent to Delhi-Meerut Expressway and the DME entry and exit point is located on NH-9, which leads many drivers to speed excessively. To curb this, we have deployed traffic police, and the situation has improved significantly,” he said.
