RJD, BJP spar over state of education

Patna: Launching a sharp attack on the NDA govt, RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan on Thursday accused the administration of pushing Bihar’s education system to the brink and playing a “cruel joke” with students’ future. The criticism came a day after CM Samrat Choudhary virtually inaugurated 211 govt degree colleges across Bihar under the “Advanced Education-Bright Future” initiative.Gagan questioned the government’s claim that the colleges would immediately start classes in six core subjects. “The ground reality is that not more than two teachers have been deputed to any of these new colleges. One will function as principal and the other as bursar. In such a situation, who will teach the students?” he asked. He alleged that most of the newly inaugurated colleges lacked their own buildings, infrastructure and educational facilities, and existed only on paper. According to him, many institutions had merely put up signboards on the premises of existing schools.Gagan said universities and colleges across Bihar were already grappling with severe staff shortages and dependence on contractual appointments. He added that earlier schemes, including model schools and the upgradation of middle schools into higher secondary institutions, had also suffered because of inadequate infrastructure and a lack of teachers.Responding to the allegations, BJP spokesperson Sumit Sashank said the govt, under the leadership of CM Samrat Choudhary, had at least taken concrete steps in the education sector. He said the establishment of 211 degree colleges was part of a long-term plan and improvements would follow gradually.Targeting the RJD, Sashank added, “They are the ones who stopped thinking beyond Charwaha Vidyalaya.” He also questioned the party’s criticism ahead of the bypoll.
