Kanpur The water level of the Ganga in Kanpur remained above the warning mark for the third consecutive day on Saturday, raising concerns for low-lying areas and riverside villages as floodwater continued to affect settlements in the Katri region and adjoining areas.According to the Flood Control department, LGC, Kanpur, the water level rose by around 0.04 metre during the past 24 hours and was recorded at 114.750 metres.The upstream reading at the Ganga Barrage stood at 114.750 metres, while the downstream level was 114.380 metres. With the warning level fixed at 114 metres and the danger mark at 115 metres, the upstream water level was just 0.25 metre below the danger level.The discharge from the barrage was recorded at 5,44,373 cusecs. The flood situation in the Katri area remained grim, with several villages affected by the rising water level.At Shuklaganj, the Ganga was recorded at 113.100 metres, or 0.10 metre above the warning mark. The warning and danger levels at Shuklaganj are 113 metres and 114 metres, respectively.Meanwhile, Haridwar Barrage and Narora Barrage released 89,197 cusecs and 77,819 cusecs of water, respectively.Around 60 people in the Katri and adjoining areas of Unnao have been affected by the rising water level. Several riverside villages have been inundated with three to four feet of water, forcing residents to depend on boats for daily movement.In some areas, residents are using tractors to negotiate waterlogged stretches, while boats are being used where tractors cannot operate. Villagers in parts of Unnao have also resorted to using makeshift thermocol boats for transportation.In Shuklaganj, floodwater has entered around 500 houses. Champa Khera, Nitua, Gagni Khera and Mohammad Nagar are among the affected areas. Around 20 villages along the Jajmau-Ganga highway have also been badly hit, with residents using boats to travel between their homes and the main roads.Meanwhile, five mud houses collapsed in Patara town following rain on Friday morning. No casualties were reported.The Ghatampur SDM appealed to villagers not to stay in dilapidated or mud houses during the rains and to move to safer locations. Lekhpals have also been directed to prepare village-wise lists of houses that have collapsed so that necessary assistance and action can be provided.
