Gurgaon: Police on Friday booked a Bihar man for abetment to suicide, a month after a 17-year-old preparing for NEET died by suicide at her home in Surat Nagar Phase 1, Rajendra Park. Her family has accused him of repeatedly harassing and threatening her over phone and video calls, including on the day she died.The accused, Agastya Chaudhary, a resident of Gaya, was booked under Section 107 (abetment of suicide of a child) of BNS. The case was registered on Sept 11, over a month after the girl’s death, following a complaint by her father. Police are yet to arrest the accused.The deceased was preparing for NEET at a coaching centre in Sector 14. Her parents have a younger son, a Class 7 student. According to police the victim and Agastya connected through social media about six months before her death.Her mother first noticed the victim speaking to Agastya on the phone in July. She described him as a friend and the woman advised the two to focus on their studies. Agastya allegedly continued contacting the girl from two phone numbers. The complaint states he threatened to defame her and demanded money. The girl’s mother, unaware of the threats’ severity, had told her daughter to stop answering his calls.A day before her death, the teenager told her mother she was under stress because of Agastya’s repeated threats during video calls. Days before that, she had reportedly received a message from an unknown number claiming Agastya was dead and asking her to travel to Bihar.On Aug 6, the victim’s parents left for work around 7.30am, leaving her and her brother at home. An investigator said the family has alleged Agastya made around 12 calls, including several video calls that day. Her brother told the family that after one such call, the girl took the phone and went upstairs.The complaint further alleges Agastya contacted a neighbour and asked him to check on the girl. When the neighbour asked the boy where his sister was, he went upstairs, found she had died by suicide.At 2.26pm, the boy called his father, who rushed home. Another neighbour told him that the girl had been taken to Sarvodaya Hospital, where she was declared dead. Police reached the house on Aug 6 after being alerted, and initially opened inquest proceedings. Her postmortem was conducted on Aug 7.
